Scooter Basics

  1. How fast can your 50cc scooters go?

Some of our models can get up to 45 mph! The average cruising speed is usually anywhere between 30-45 mph. As the engine gets broken in, you will usually see your speed and acceleration increase. Other factors include the riders weight, road conditions, routine maintenance, and any cargo you're carrying.

  2. What is different between 4-stroke and 2-stroke scooters? Which type do you sell?

4-stroke engines do NOT require you to mix gas and oil together when filling up. When going to fill up, all you do is put premium gas in the gas tank. Engine Oil is seperate and needs to be changed like a car. 2-stroke engines require you to mix gas and oil together when filling up. WE SELL 4-STROKE SCOOTERS.

  3. What is the weight capacity on a scooter?

This can vary by which scooter you're looking at. Some of our larger models like the Riot, Milano, and Benelli are built for a heavier rider, while the Lotus, VIP, etc are not as suitable. On average, a smaller scooter can handle about 200 pounds, and the larger scooters closer to 300 pounds.

  4. Is a scooter easy to ride?

If you can ride a bicycle, you can probably ride a scooter. 50cc scooters are very easy to control, and riders of all sizes can usually handle them just fine.

  5. Will you teach me how to ride my scooter?

Absolutely. Stick around after the sale and we'll take the time to make sure you're 100% comfortable on your new ride before you go home.

  6. What kind of gas mileage do scooters get?

Depending on the scooter, the rider, and how it is driven scooters get between 80 and 110 miles per gallon.

  7. When should I get my scooter serviced?

Bring your scooter in at 300 miles initially, then again at 1000 miles and each additional 1000 mile interval after that.

It is also necessary to prep your scooter before long term storage.  We can do it for you or you can do it yourself.

Scooter Laws in Maryland

  1. What kind of license do I need to drive a 50cc scooter?

In Maryland, all you need is a standard drivers license like you would need to drive a car.

If you don't have a standard drivers license, don't worry! You can just get a "moped permit" from the MVA that allows you to drive a 49cc scooter. See the MVA for more details.

  2. What if I don't have a regular driver's license?

No worries! You can pick up a "moped permit" from the MVA by taking a written test at the MVA.

NOTE: You DO NOT need a moped permit if you already have a standard  drivers license.

  3. Does a 50cc scooter need insurance in Maryland?

Yes, you need liability insurance coverage only. Most customers typically pay between $5-12/month for this based on their driving record, etc. Contact your provider for more details.

  4. Does a 50cc scooter need to be registered or titled in Maryland?

    This question has two answers.

If you are a permanent Maryland resident:

    • Yes, you do have to title and register your scooter. This is a one-time fee of $25 for both to the MVA. We can complete this at our store for free with you.

If you are a permanent resident of another state:

    • If you do not plan to ever ride your scooter at home, you don't have to register/title/tage your scooter anywhere.
    • If you do plan to ever ride your scooter at home, you must follow the appropriate scooter laws for you state, which may include titling, registering, taging, etc. See your state's DMV for details.

  5. Do I need to wear a helmet while riding a 50cc scooter?

Yes, you must wear a DOT approved helmet if you are driving a scooter in Maryland or are a passenger on a scooter. This law applies if you are a resident of Maryland or not.

You must also have eye protection if your scooter doesn't have a windshield.

Our Scooters

  1. What kind of warranty do you offer?

***Please see a College Scooters dealership for complete warranty information and restrictions.***

SYM scooters: 24 months parts and labor warranty, tire-to-tire.

Lance scooters: 24 months parts and labor warranty, tire-to-tire.

Keeway scooters: 2 years parts, 1 year labor warranty. Coverage extends for the time stated or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Peace scooters: 1 year or 2000 mile engine & transmission. 6 month or 1000 mile extended coverage. Parts and labor for both.

  2. How reliable are your scooters?

As long as you properly maintain the scooter they will last for thousands of miles.  We cannot stress how important the 300 mile service is to the life of your scooter as well as proper prep work for long term storage.

  3. Are some scooters more reliable than others?

Yes, and this is usually reflected by the price.

While you may be on a tight budget, keep in mind the little extra money you save on a nicer scooter now saves you lots of service money in the future!

The scooter you choose should all be based on how you plan to use it. If it's going to be used for fun on the weekends, or for short commutes to campus, our budget scooters are perfect for you! However, if you plan to use a scooter as a main form of transport, an extremely reliable scooter from Lance or SYM should be considered.

While we stand behind the quality and warranty of every scooter we sell, we want to ensure our customers understand that quality is reflected in price.
